If your Pinterest feed is slowly becoming a collection of burgundy bedrooms, leopard print accents, dark wood furniture, velvet sofas, and moody lighting… I think I may have found your home decor style.
Dark feminine maximalism.
I recently started a series about finding your home decor style because I feel like we hear about the same aesthetics over and over again. Modern farmhouse. Minimalist. Organic modern. Beige on beige on slightly darker beige.
And listen, those homes can be absolutely beautiful. But what if you want your home to have a little more personality? A little color? Maybe even a little drama?
That’s where dark feminine maximalism comes in.
What Is Dark Feminine Maximalism?
Dark feminine maximalism is a moody home decor style that mixes deep colors, dramatic patterns, rich textures, and statement pieces.
Think deep burgundy, oxblood velvet, dark wood furniture, leopard print, vintage-inspired frames, warm lamps, dramatic floral arrangements, and artwork that actually makes you stop and look at it.
It feels feminine without being overly delicate. It’s dramatic without necessarily being gothic. And it’s maximalist without meaning you have to cover every single inch of your home with decor.
For me, the entire style feels like a cool hotel bar, a vintage apartment, and your most dramatic Pinterest board somehow became one room.
Start With a Moody Color Palette

The easiest way to create this look is through color.
Burgundy is obviously one of my current obsessions. It instantly makes a room feel warmer, richer, and a little more expensive. Deep olive green, chocolate brown, black, oxblood, plum, and warm cream also work beautifully with this style.
You don’t have to paint your entire room burgundy either.
If you’re renting or just scared of committing to a dark wall, start with bedding, velvet pillows, curtains, a rug, or artwork.
Even one deep color can completely change the feeling of an otherwise basic room.
Don’t Be Scared of Leopard Print

I know. Leopard print can go wrong very quickly.
But hear me out.
When it’s mixed with dark wood, burgundy, and vintage-inspired decor, leopard print can actually look so good.
The secret is treating it like an accent instead of making everything leopard. Try a small pillow, throw blanket, ottoman, or one statement art piece.
Personally, I love how leopard print keeps a moody room from feeling too serious. It adds a slightly unexpected, cool-girl feeling to the space.
Statement Art Can Change the Entire Room

One thing I’ve noticed while creating all of these room inspiration photos is how much the artwork changes the space.
A blank wall can make a beautifully decorated room feel unfinished. The second you add a statement print above a bed, bar cart, dresser, or console table, the entire room starts to feel more intentional.
I’ve been so obsessed with this decor style lately that I ended up turning the entire vibe into a poster collection.
Think moody cocktails, dramatic florals, leopard imagery, deep burgundy, and artwork for spaces that need a little more personality.
I’ve been styling some of the posters throughout my dark feminine room inspiration photos, and you can shop the full poster collection on my Etsy shop here.
Mix Old and New Decor

You also don’t need to buy an entirely new room of furniture to create this aesthetic.
Dark feminine maximalism actually looks better when everything isn’t perfectly matching.
Mix a modern velvet sofa with a vintage-style lamp. Put fashion books on an antique-inspired side table. Add an ornate gold mirror above a simple dresser.
Your home should feel collected, not like you ordered the entire display room from one store.
I think some of the most interesting homes are the ones where you can tell someone slowly found pieces they loved and figured out how to make them work together.
Add Warm, Moody Lighting

Lighting makes such a huge difference with this decor style.
Personally, I would skip the bright overhead light whenever possible.
Table lamps, vintage-inspired lampshades, warm bulbs, and soft lighting instantly make burgundy, dark wood, and velvet textures feel richer.
Even if you aren’t ready to completely redecorate your room, changing your lighting can completely change the mood of the space.
Your Home Doesn’t Have to Be Beige
I think that’s why I’m having so much fun exploring different home decor styles right now.
There are so many ways to decorate a home.
Your space can be burgundy. It can be green. It can have leopard print, giant artwork, dramatic lamps, and way too many velvet pillows.
Your home is supposed to feel like you.
If dark feminine maximalism makes you want to completely redecorate your bedroom at 11 p.m., you might have just found your style.
I’m continuing my Finding Your Home Decor Style series and exploring even more interiors for those of us who want a little more color, personality, and drama in our homes.
